An instruction sheet sent to organisers of endurance swims

Miss Gleitze’s Endurance Test
Arrangements for Stewards

Three Stewards are requested for each spell of three hours duration, commencing at…………

The Stewards taking up the first term of three hours will be in attendance at ……….. (time) and have charge of the Log of the Swim, and pass same duly verified to their successors.

The duties of the Stewards are:

To enter on the Log the number of strikes per minute used by swimmer. record any incident of interest that may occur during their period of duty, and certify that she did not touch the sides or bottom of the bath, rest, or float.

To see that any request made by Miss Gleitze is attended to.

To see that her requirements for feeding are attended to.

To furnish the gramophone music as arranged beforehand.

To see that the regulations set out for the conduct of the audience are observed.

They are empowered to remove or have removed an intoxicated person, or any person who interferes with the progress of the swimmer or the comfort of the audience.

Stewards are supplied with badges which enable them to free admission at all times during the progress of the swim.

If for any reason a Steward is not able to perform the continuous service of three hours allotted to him, he is requested to see that a Steward from the official list is available, as the Log must be signed by three Stewards who have been in continuous attendance for the specified time, and the three signatories must verify the fact that Miss Gleitze swam continuously for three hours without floating, or touching the bottom or sides of the Swimming Bath. This is a most important regulation if Miss Gleitze is to have an unquestioned record of her endurance test.
